Gamescom Opening Night Live 2024: biggest announcements and trailers

Much like backpacks and lunchboxes showing up in the seasonal aisle of your local Target, nothing heralds the end of summer like Opening Night Live. Hosted by Geoff Keighley, ONL is a video game showcase much like Summer Game Fest. It’s the event that kicks off Gamescom 2024 — a video game expo held primarily in Germany — and is traditionally the final video game event of the summer.

And this year featured plenty of expected games, like Starfield’s Shattered Space expansion, Sid Meier’s Civilization 7, Marvel Rivals, and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, along with a few surprises, including the announce of Borderlands 4, a new Mafia game, Genshin Impact launching on Xbox, and word that Monument Valley 3 is coming later this year to Netflix.

If you weren’t able to tune in live, here are all the biggest trailers and announcements.

Civilization 7 lets you mix and match history — and it’s a blast

Imagine Caesar Augustus at the head of an army of Mongol warriors or Ben Franklin building the Great Wall of China. In Sid Meier’s Civilization 7, such flights of historical fantasy can become historical fact. The game has new ages to experience, new civilizations to build up, new leaders to guide them, and — for the first time in franchise history — the ability to mix and match leaders and civilizations to build the empire of your wildest dreams. The Verge had the opportunity to test out the game and talk with its developers at Firaxis Games. The brief, three-hour demo wasn’t enough time to get a feel for how well leaders and different civilizations work together, but I left feeling excited about all the ways Civilization VII aims to change the course of history.

In previous Civilization games, civs were always tied to a specific leader who was usually, but not always, a noteworthy head of state. Later iterations of the game offered multiple leaders for civs, and on a couple of occasions where it made historical sense, one leader could straddle multiple civs like France and England both having access to Eleanor of Aquitaine, who, during her unusually-long-for-the-time-period life, was the queen of both countries.

Asus brings Wi-Fi 7 to its tri-band ROG gaming router

Asus announced three new Wi-Fi 7 products today, including a tri-band ROG Rapture GT gaming router, a dual-band router, and a new Wi-Fi 7 USB adapter.

The ROG Rapture GT-BE19000 has a familiar ’80s retro-future look shared by predecessors like the quad-band GT-BE98, along with most of the same specs, including two 10Gbps and five 2.5Gbps ethernet ports. It also supports 320MHz channel bandwidth on the 6GHz band, which unlocks much higher throughput (although you’ll need a 2Gbps or higher connection to your ISP for that to shine).

  • One more thing.

ONL ended with a very brief tease for the Mafia: the Old Country, which is set in 1900s Sicily and will “uncover the origins of organized crime.” It launches some time in 2025.

  • Microsoft confirms Indiana Jones is coming to PS5 after its Xbox debut

Microsoft and Bethesda are officially bringing Indiana Jones and the Great Circle to PS5 after it debuts first on Xbox. During Gamescom Opening Night Live, Bethesda confirmed Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is coming to Xbox and PC first on December 9th, before launching on PS5 in spring 2025.

The confirmation comes months after The Verge exclusively revealed Microsoft was considering launching Indiana Jones and the Great Circle on PS5. I wrote in February that Bethesda’s Indiana Jones game would have a rather short period of exclusivity, with Bethesda considering a PS5 launch months after the December 2024 launch on Xbox and PC.

  • Peter Molyneux returns to god games.

After some, let’s say, detours, the veteran designer and his 22cans studio have revealed a more traditional strategy game called Masters of Albion, which at the very least has some cool interface ideas. Here’s the first trailer.

  • Here’s the Squid Game game.

At Opening Night Live 2024, Netflix showed off a trailer of Squid Game: Unleashed, the upcoming Squid Game mobile title. The trailer makes the game look kind of silly, which feels at odds with the themes of the actual show.

The game is set to release later this year. The show’s second season is coming soon, too, on December 26th.

  • It’s the freakin’ bat!

Batman: Arkham Shadow is the next entry in the Batman: Arkham series but with a twist...it’s in VR. Camouflaj, the studio known for another superhero VR experience, Iron Man VR, debuted the first gameplay trailer during Opening Night Live 2024. Arkham Shadow will be a full-length, VR game launching exclusively on the Meta Quest 3 sometime in October.

  • Herding has never looked so fun.

Herdling is a beautiful new game about herding from developer Okomotive (Far: Changing Tides and Far: Lone Sails) and publisher Panic (Untitled Goose Game, Thank Goodness You’re Here). It’s launching on PC and consoles in 2025.

  • That’s a lot of video games.

Secret Level is a new animated anthology series featuring a bunch of video game franchises that’s coming to Prime Video on December 10th. Featured franchises include Armored Core, Mega Man, Sifu, Spelunky, and “various PlayStation Studios games” — I’m pretty sure I saw Kratos in the trailer.

  • Towerborne heads to early access next month.

I reported earlier this year that Microsoft was considering launching Towerborne into early access. After a promise of a “special surprise” during gamescom opening night live, Microsoft has just confirmed that Towerborne will be available in early access on Steam on September 10th, and on Xbox in early 2025. A full free-to-play launch is planned for 2025.

  • Rivalry is so dated.

And by that, I mean, of course, that the Overwatch-like multiplayer game Marvel Rivals finally has a release date. It’ll be hitting PC, Xbox, and PlayStation on December 6th.

  • Starfield’s Shattered Space expansion launches in September

Earlier in the summer, Bethesda officially unveiled Shattered Space, the first major expansion for its sci-fi roleplaying game Starfield. Now, we finally have a date: the update will be launching on September 30th. It’s coming to both Xbox and PC.

Along with the date, the studio also revealed a (brief) trailer for the expansion, which shows off some more of its darker tone (at least compared to most of the base game). The story is centered on the mysterious faction known as “House Va’Ruun” and its homeworld, where players will encounter a “frightening new cosmic threat and uncover the secrets behind the galaxy’s most enigmatic faction.”

  • Civilization 7 launches in February

You’ll be able to rewrite the course of history in Civilization 7 next year. Firaxis Games showed up during Opening Night Live 2024 with a new trailer and some news — Civilization 7 will launch on just about everything you can play a video game on February 11th, 2025.

Civilization 6 released eight years ago but has received a steady flow of updates and DLC in the intervening years. Firaxis Games announced it was working on a new Civilization game in February of last year. Since then, the studio has been slowly rolling out the details, debuting a teaser trailer during this year’s Summer Game Fest and now a new release date trailer for Gamescom 2024. If this trailer isn’t enough for all the 4X fanatics in the house, Firaxis has even more to share, hosting a 20-minute gameplay deep dive on Twitch at 4:30PM ET later today.

  • Monument Valley 3 is coming to Netflix.

It’s been years since the game was first revealed, and now we not only have a first look, but also news that MV3 will be launching on December 10th — exclusively on Netflix. The first two games in the series, meanwhile, will hit Netflix in September and October.

  • Born to be Wilds.

While it doesn’t come out until next year, Capcom continues to show off the next big Monster Hunter game, with a new trailer featuring a very creepy giant spider that players will need to take down.

  • I know what I’m Dune in early 2025.

We finally have a release window for the survival game Dune: Awakening, which is going to make me do terrible, terrible things when it launches. In the meantime, check out this new gameplay trailer.

  • Genshin Impact is coming to Xbox.

Xbox fans will soon finally be able to join in the anime-style open-world environment of Genshin Impact. The game is arriving on Xbox Series X / S on November 20th, and preorder bonuses are available right now.

  • Bloom & Rage and a mystery.

The new trailer for Lost Records — the next release from Life is Strange studio Don’t Nod — looks all heartwarming and cozy, until it becomes very clear there’s a dark secret at its core. The game’s first episode launches on February 18th, with another a month later.

  • Take on — or make — chaotic dungeons in King of Meat.

The new game from Glowmade and Amazon Games will let you battle through dungeons with up to four players, or, if you want to, you can create your own. King of Meat will have crossplay and cross-progression, and it’s coming to PC and consoles.

  • That’s Joker!

Persona 3 Reload’s expansion pass adds Joker from Persona 5 to the game... but apparently as a boss fight. I’m conflicted: I love Persona 5, but I don’t want to do anything to hurt my good friend Joker!

  • The goat is back.

One of the strangest games of the past decade is getting remastered. The updated version of Goat Simulator, which first launched back in 2014, will include all of the game’s DLCs, along with new visuals and some quality-of-life tweaks. It’s launching later this year.

  • Another look at Black Ops 6.

Ahead of the next Call of Duty’s debut in October, Activision has provided yet another trailer for the game, this time walking viewers through a campaign mission full of trademark Call of Duty action set pieces. For those who haven’t been keeping track: the shooter will be coming to Game Pass and might even have a reasonable download size.

  • Borderlands 4 is launching in 2025

Gearbox is planning to launch Borderlands 4 sometime in 2025, the company announced at the Gamescom Opening Night Live show on Tuesday. The game is set to launch on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X / S.

The reveal trailer was pretty mysterious, and the trailer’s description on YouTube doesn’t offer much in the way of specifics, either. “In this next installment of the definitive looter shooter, players will assume the role of a legendary Vault Hunter as they blast their way through hordes of enemies in search of new treasures to loot on an all-new planet,” according to the description. At the very least, this new game seems like it will continue the legacy from other titles in the series.

  • Thanks, Geoff.

Opening Night Live host Geoff Keighley shared a handy list of what’s going to be shown at the event. He promises there will be “many” new game announcements and surprises, too.
